Auroral Ionosphere Model with PC Index as an Input

چکیده
Auroral Ionosphere Model (AIM-E) is designed to calculate chemical content in the high-latitude E region ionosphere and takes into account both solar EUV radiation electron precipitation of magnetospheric origin. The latter extremely important for auroral chemistry especially disturbed conditions. In order maximize AIM-E timing accuracy when simulating highly variable periods course geomagnetic storms substorms, we suggest parameterize OVATION-Prime empirical model with ground-based Polar Cap (PC) index. This gives an advantage to: (1) perform ionospheric simulation actual input, since PC index reflects geoeffective wind conditions; (2) promptly assess current situation, available real-time 1 min resolution. results demonstrate a good agreement incoherent scatter radar data (EISCAT UHF, Tromso) vertical sounding Arctic zone during events intense particle precipitation. reproduces well calculated column (90–140 km) critical frequency sporadic layer (fOEs) formed by precipitating electrons. can be applied monitor entire ionosphere, including subauroral zones, which predicting conditions radio wave propagation.

Auroral vortex street formed by the magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling instability
By performing three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations including Alfvén eigenmode perturbations most unstable to the ionospheric feedback effects, we examined the auroral vortex street that often appears just before substorm onset. We found that an initially placed arc splits, intensifies, and rapidly deforms into a vortex street. We also found that there is a critical convection elect...
متن کاملAuroral Electrojets and 3d Currents in the Ionosphere-magnetosphere System
There are shortly described results of the analysis of variations in the location and intensity of the auroral electrojets during magnetic storms and substorms using a numerical method for estimating the equivalent ionospheric currents based on data from meridian chains of magnetic observatories. It is shown that the westward electrojet adjoins to the polar electrojet located at cusp latitudes ...

In order to provide observations to help decide between competing theories of Anomalous Ion Spectra (AIS) observed at several Incoherent Scattering Radar (ISR) observatories, to explore the possibility of any connection between this phenomenon and visible auroral forms, and to see if enhanced scattering is due to localised scattering structures, we have used the two antennas of the EISCAT Svalb...
متن کاملThermospheric nitric oxide at higher latitudes: Model calculations with auroral energy input
[1] The nitric oxide (NO) density in the lower thermosphere has been calculated by a photochemical model for NOx and compared with measured NO densities from Student Nitric Oxide Explorer (SNOE). At higher latitudes the most important contributor for NO density increases is energetic electron precipitation. The electron energy is estimated in two ways, from auroral ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray me...
متن کاملInterferometric observations of filamentary structures associated with plasma instability in the auroral ionosphere
[1] We present evidence of filamented structure in the auroral ionosphere, observed through enhanced radar echoes produced by plasma instabilities in the filaments. Enhancements are observed in upor down-shifted ionacoustic peaks, or both, with power well above thermal levels. Detailed theoretical understanding of these enhancements is still lacking, and several different theories are currently...
